The key point of the FNHTR is that the febrile illness is mediated by donor cytokine release largely from breakdown of donor WBCs through two mechanisms: prolonged storage and antibody-mediated lysis. The cytokines are the direct cause of the fever, and the selective involvement of WBCs is why it is nonhemolytic.
The previous wording was also vague, and could be misinterpreted to mean "host antibodies against HLA antigens on the entire blood product", which is a potential source of confusion with Acute Hemolytic Transfusion Reaction (AHTR).
This rewording changes the card to emphasize the key component to the pathophysiology, facilitates differentiation from AHTR, and also simplifies the card in accordance with the guidelines for creating effective flash cards.
