- Splenectomy can reduce risk of gallstones
- Pigmented gallstones make up 20-30% of gallstones in the USA
- These stones come in black or brown and contain less than 30% cholesterol
- Black stones are associated with hemolytic diseases like hereditary spherocytosis or sickle cell disease
- Brown stones are larger, softer, and usually associated with bacterial infection and parasites, and more common in Asian countries
