{{c1::G-banding (Giemsa banding)}}: The most common technique in clinical cytogenetics. Metaphase chromosomes are treated briefly with trypsin (to digest proteins) then stained with {{c1::Giemsa}} dye. This produces a pattern of dark and light bands; dark bands are generally {{c2::AT-rich}}, heterochromatic, and gene-poor, while light bands are {{c3::GC-rich}} and gene-rich. G-banding yields 300-400 bands per haploid genome at good resolution and allows identification of individual chromosomes by their unique banding pattern.
