- Wernicke encephalopathy is reversible and presents with classic triad of confusion, ataxia, and nystagmus/ophthalmoplegia
- Korsakoff syndrome is a later complication of prolonged B1 deficiency that is irreversible and presents with a triad of confabulations (buzzword), anterograde/retrograde amnesia, and personality changes
- Korsakoff syndrome represents damage to the limbic system, especially the mammillary bodies of the hypothalamus
