Herpes zoster (shingles) is a localised, blistering painful rash caused by reactivation of the virus years after a chicken pox infection. It is characterised by a dermatomal distribution only appearing in the distribution of one or two adjacent sensory nerves, this means it is usually unilateral with a sharp cut-off point at the midline.
