Rationale for change
Treating patients by their race is rooted in systemic racism in medicine and does not account for many other aspects of peoples' lives, including all of their social determinants of health (SDoH). SDoH contribute far more to a person's overall well-being than their race, as race is a social construct. Changing this card to reflect that elderly patients respond well to these drugs for HTN is far better as race-based medicine is phased-out.

- The 2020 ISH Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines list first-line pharmacologic treatment of HTN in Black patients as either HCTZ + DHP-CCB or ARB + DHP-CCB
- This is a commonly tested concept and follows current ACC/AHA guidelines, which state: "In black adults with hypertension but without HF or CKD, including those with DM, initial antihypertensive treatment should include a thiazide-type diuretic or CCB"
- These guidelines have recently come under scrutiny within the medical community due to concerns about race-based biases, as race is a social construct rather than a biologically meaningful scientific category; read more here
