Mechanical ventilation in patients with ARDS should use {{c1::low::low/high}} tidal volumes and {{c1::high::low/high}} PEEP

- Low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) decreases the likelihood of overdistending alveoli and improves mortality (imagine a low tide slowly washing into the alveoli, nice and easy)
- Positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) improves oxygenation by preventing alveolar collapse at the end of expiration. "PEEP the alveoli open"
