Rationale for change
I don't think eTG explained this very well; however, I don't think 5-ASA and thiopurines are combined for UC. My interpretation is that 5-ASA is started first, and if the patient is still refractory, then transition to thiopurines as a second line.

- Ideally, patients who responded to rectal mesalazine should continue it as maintenance therapy, but at a reduced frequency
- For patients with severe initial disease or frequent relapses despite maintenance therapy with 5-aminosalicylates, prolonged remission may be achieved with a thiopurine
