Rationale for change
Serum sickness (SS) is caused by foreign proteins in antivenom, antitoxin, or monoclonal antibodies. Serum sickness-like reactions (SSLR) are caused by medications like penicillin and TMP-SMX. SS also has high immune complex titers and extensive complement activation, whereas SSLR does not or only minimally.
