\(n_{initial} > n_{final}\) ⇒ The electron is moving from a higher energy level to a lower one so this would be the energy of the photon emitted as a result.
\(n_{final} > n_{initial}\) ⇒ The electron is being promoted from a lower energy level to a higher energy level. This would be the energy of the photon that the electron would need to absorb to make that transition
