- A-a gradient < 15
- Hypoventilation = ↓ pH + ↑ PaCO2 + ↓ PaO2
- The A-a gradient measures oxygen transfer from the lungs to the blood and can help determine the cause of low blood oxygen levels. To calculate it, the alveolar oxygen tension (PAO2) is first determined using a specific equation: PAO2 = (FiO2 x [Patm - PH20]) - (PaCO2/R)= (0.21 × [760-47]) - (59/0.8) = 76
- The A-a gradient is then calculated by A-a gradient = PAO2 - PaO2 = 76 - 62 = 14
- A normal A-a gradient is less than 15, and anything above 30 is considered elevated regardless of age
