In the Ascites article, if you go to the Diagnosis tab, "abdominal ultrasound" is listed as the initial study of choice. However, if you read more, it says it is used to evaluate for an underlying condition (i.e., cirrhosis). However, this card says the patient already has cirrhosis, so his underlying condition is clear. If you go to "Ascitic fluid analysis," you'll notice that it says the indication is "all patients with new-onset ascites to identify the underlying cause."
Also, when I asked the AI Learning mode in AMBOSS, here's what it said:
The sequencing is: (1) diagnostic paracentesis with fluid analysis, (2) abdominal ultrasound with Doppler, (3) laboratory evaluation, and (4) urgent EGD for variceal management and endoscopic therapy. This comprehensive approach simultaneously addresses both the new ascites (to exclude SBP and confirm portal hypertension) and the variceal bleeding while assessing overall decompensation.
