plasmids may be required for a prokaryotes survival. for instance, in an environment with antibiotics, a prokaryote may require the plasmid to confer antibiotic resistance.
even if the plasmid is not required for survival, it may provide great selective advantages, so saying that they are not required for survival is inaccurate.
