While a left-to-right shunt increases the risk of developing endocarditis, it does not CAUSE the endocarditis like stated in the card. The cause is still ultimately the bacteria/autoimmune process affecting the endocardium.

- When endocarditis is suspected, an echocardiogram is recommended to identify vegetations around the border of the valves, within the defect, or on adjacent valves in the direction of the high velocity jet created by the shunt
- Endocarditis prophylaxis is not recommended for uncomplicated shunts; surgical repair is recommended for severe pulmonary HTN
