- Overactivation of 5-HT receptors
- Dihydroergotamine is the ergot used in migraine treatment. However, it is not frequently used due to its significant side effect profile, including gangrene and vasospastic (Prinzmetal) angina
- Bromocriptine is also an ergot derivative. Both come from the ergot fungi. Thus, do not use triptans + an ergot derivative, or two ergot derivatives together. Do not use these drugs in the setting of uncontrolled hypertension either. Hence, this is why non-ergot dopamine agonists (e.g., pramipexole) are preferred in Parkinson disease
