Rationale for change
Infant nutrition and breastfeeding › Infant nutrition › Assessment of milk intake
"The number of wet diapers typically increases daily during the first week of life as milk intake stabilizes:
Day 1: At least 1 wet diaper
Day 2: At least 2 wet diapers
Days 3–5+: At least 6–8 wet diapers per day.
Transition from black (meconium) to green by day 3, and to a bright, seedy yellow by day 5.
Red flags: The presence of uric acid crystals (appearing as pink or orange "brick dust" spots in the diaper) is normal in the first few days but may indicate inadequate intake if it persists beyond day 4 or 5".
