During the Industrial Revolution, people left rural communities for city factory jobs, disrupting attachment to traditional norms, like community ties and extended family life, resulting in anomie/disconnect from their communities.
Anomie = Normlessness. In contrast, anarchy is an absence of effective rules, hierarchy, or leaders.
Note: According to the AAMC, anomie refers specifically to a lack of attachment to social norms. In contrast, Kaplan (2025–2026) and UWorld define anomie as the absence of social norms altogether.
