Rationale for change
EA with distal TEF is not "characterized" by failure to pass an NG tube in the same way that it is not "characterized" by neonate emesis upon feeding. For a thing to be characterized by a trait, that trait must uniquely or prominently distinguish it from other things within the same larger group. NG tube placement failure or neonate emesis on feeding can be caused by a variety of factors, so it's simply not accurate to say either of these findings characterize the disease. EA with distal TEF is associated with a failure to pass an NG tube.
