Text
Deep venous thrombosis is treated with {{c1::anticoagulants}} to prevent thrombus propagation, {{c1::thrombolytics}} to bust the clot, and a(n) {{c1::IVC filter}} for treatment-refractory patients
Extra

- Anticoagulants: heparin → warfarin
- Thrombolytics: tPA or streptokinase
- IVC filter only prevents PE, not DVT
Management:
- IV heparin or subcutaneous LMWH
- Submassive PE: consider tPA
- Massive PE: tPA vs. pulmonary embolectomy
- IVC filter: only if contraindication to anticoagulation

- In cases where there is a strong suspicion of VTE (venous thromboembolism) administer heparin immediately, even before the diagnosis is confirmed then a CT angiogram of the pulmonary arteries should be obtained
