Rationale for change
Proposed revision to Criterion C (DSM-5):
Criterion C for Bipolar II disorder should state “No history of manic episodes” rather than “no history of manic or mixed episodes.” In DSM-IV, “mixed episodes” were a distinct diagnosis; however, DSM-V removed mixed episodes as a separate category and replaced them with the “with mixed features” specifier, which can apply to both hypomanic and major depressive episodes. As a result, patients with Bipolar II disorder may have mixed features, but must not have a history of a manic episode.
