In addition to smoking, adults with any of the following should also receive a pneumococcal vaccine:
- Chronic disease of the lungs, cardiovascular system, kidneys, or liver (including diabetes mellitus)
- CSF leaks and conditions at high risk for CSF leak (particularly cochlear implant)
- Immunocompromising conditions, including splenic dysfunction
- Residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities
