Aminoglycosides and tetracyclines both bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit protein synthesis, not the synthesis of the ribosomal subunit itself. Aminoglycosides block formation of the initiation complex and cause mRNA misreading, while tetracyclines block aminoacyl-tRNA attachment to the A site.
