- Folate deficiency is often associated with alcohol use disorder or poor nutrition

- B12 deficiency is almost always associated with poor absorption, either because of physical removal of part of the stomach/intestines (i.e. gastric bypass) or lack of intrinsic factor (pernicious anemia)
- Folate deficiency is often associated with alcohol use disorder or poor nutrition
- B12 levels should be checked before starting folate supplementation as if a deficiency of both vitamins is present and only folate is supplemented, the anemia will resolve but the patient may experience the neurologic complications of B12 deficiency
