Episomes
- An episome is a segment of genetic material that can exist separately from the chromosome OR integrate into chromosome.
- F factor, HPV
Different from transposons because:
- Once integrated, it stays embedded or excises to return to plasmid state.
- Does not hop around randomly the way transposons do.
Transposons are capable of inserting and removing themselves from genome repeatedly.
