Was under the impression cells walls are more for structural support as opposed to solute regulation which is more of a cell/plasma membrane function.
Changing to cell envelope would encompass both cell wall and membrane.
"One of the most important functions of the prokaryotic cell wall is to prevent cells from rupturing due to
osmotic forces. Although some eukaryotes (eg, plants, algae, fungi) also have cell walls, the chemical
composition of prokaryotic cell walls is distinct from their eukaryotic counterparts. The two major bacterial
cell wall types can be differentiated by performing a staining technique known as a Gram stain. Although
not possible for all bacterial organisms, Gram staining is typically one of the first steps in bacterial
organism identification and can provide important information regarding diagnosis and treatment of
infectious diseases" Uworld
