- Totipotent stem cells: the least specialized cells that can give rise to both placental and fetal cells. Only the zygote and the embryo up to 8 cell stage are totipotent.
- Pluripotent stem cells: give rise only to fetal cells (ie, all cell lineages from the three germ layers).
- Multipotent cells: are able to differentiate only into the specialized cells of certain tissues; these cells are also found in adults.
