If it is not closed sufficiently, excessive loss of circuit volume due to leaks prevents manual ventilation.
At the same time, if it is closed too much or is fully closed, a progressive rise in pressure could result in pulmonary barotrauma (eg, pneumothorax) or hemodynamic compromise, or both.
