- Helps distinguish between central (low FSH due to low GnRH or low secretion from pituitary) and peripheral (high FSH due to low estrogen negative feedback) causes
- Absent breast development indicates a lack of estrogen, thus estrogen levels do not need to be measured
- If the patient has reduced FSH levels, order TSH / prolactin to rule out endocrine causes, then MRI next for suspected Kallman syndrome or craniopharyngioma
- If the patient has elevated FSH levels, suspect Turner syndrome and order karyotyping
