Extra
- Traumatic vascular dissection / occlusion of the vertebral artery is the most common cause of Wallenberg syndrome
- Internal thoracic artery can be used for CABG instead of saphenous, more resistant to failure / stenosis; superior epigastric artery comes off the ITA and anastomoses with inferior epigastric, allowing collateral circulation between subclavian and external iliac (e.g., in coarctation of the aorta)
- Inferior thyroid artery (off the thyrocervical trunk) ligation can damage the recurrent laryngeal nerve
- Dorsal scapular artery anastomoses with the subscapular artery to provide blood flow to scapula in case of subclavian obstruction; can be damaged by knife wounds
