Red blood is missing lead for a Lower GI Bleed, maybe try to clarify in card or change to melena. Even in the flow chart it says hematochezia for Lower GI Bleed.

- Prior to initiating a workup for GI bleeding, it is important to determine if the source is the upper or lower GI tract
- If the patient is vomiting blood or has coffee ground emesis, then the source is clearly an UGIB
- Since a massive UGIB can cause bleeding per rectum, it is imperative that an UGIB source is ruled out first. This is achieved by placing an NG tube and aspirating for blood or coffee grounds. If it returns blood, an upper endoscopy should be performed first. If the aspirate returns bile, then an UGIB is ruled out
