Extra
- Usually presents in the third trimester, but can present up to 6 weeks after delivery!
- Swollen fenestrae between renal glomerular capillary endothelial cells are implicated
- Hypertension = SBP > 140 OR DBP > 90
- Development of significant proteinuria (> 300 mg/24 hr, ≥ 1-2+ protein) prior to 20 weeks gestation suggests underlying kidney disease that was likely present before conception!
NOTE: under current definitions, a patient with new-onset HTN + end-organ dysfunction but no proteinuria is automatically classified as preeclampsia with severe features
