What would occur if a patient with a tension pneumothorax was intubated before chest decompression (needle or tube thoracostomy)?
The positive-pressure ventilation would {{c1::increase::increase / decrease}} accumulated air in the {{c1::intrathoracic}} space which would {{c1::exacerbate::relieve / exacerbate}} the tension pneumothorax leading to cardiovascular collapse

Extra
- Important exception to the typical order of establishing the airway first
- If a patient with a tension pneumothorax requires mechanical ventilation, immediate tube thoracostomy should be performed first
- Needle thoracostomy is a temporizing measure. Once the patient is out of immediate danger, a thoracostomy tube or catheter should be placed
- If immediately available and appropriate for the clinical situation, a thoracostomy tube or catheter is an alternative for initial decompression
