Rationale for change
VMA and HVA are not metanephrines. The 3-O-methylated metabolites of epinephrine (metanephrine) and norepinephrine (normetanephrine) are collectively referred to as metanephrines. Metanephrines are further reduced to VMA. HVA is a dopamine metabolite and is unrelated to metanephrines or their metabolism. When looking for a pheochromocytoma, all three metabolites (metanephrines, VMA, and HVA) can be tested with metanephrines being the most sensitive.
