- Viroids are similar to viruses, but they are composed of a short, circular, single strand of RNA
- Unlike viruses, viroids do not have a protein coat
- When infecting cells, they bind RNA sequences to silence them and prevent host gene expression

Viroids cause multiple plant diseases, most studied :
- Potato-Spindle-Tuber viroid disease (PSTVd)
- Chrysanthemum-Stunt viroid disease (CSVd)
Similar to a viroid, Hepatitis D is a circular, single-stranded piece of RNA but, unlike a viroid, it affects humans.
