- Due to Rickettsia rickettsii
- Blanching maculopapular rash which spreads to trunk, palms, and soles; may become petechial and/or hemorrhagic
- Not to be confounded with the maculopapular (copper-red) rash of secondary syphilis
- Despite its name, the disease occurs primarily in the South Atlantic states (e.g., North Carolina)
