Original image (top image) wasn't actually relevant to the topic of the card. Bottom image no longer needed with this suggestion. This image does a much better job in making it clear how a phosphodiester bond is formed and results in the release of a pyrophosphate. I adapted the original image to include the alpha, beta, and gamma labels as well as the pyrophosphate labels which is allowed under license. I've been tested several times by Kaplan and by the AAMC practice test/questions about the fact that nucleotides in their free form exist as nucleotide triphosphates with an alpha, beta, and gamma phosphate group attached and which groups are lost in the formation of a phosphodiester bond. In the AAMC practice tests and in the Kaplan practice test, this is tested as which phosphate would need to be labeled to visualize some elongated/replicated DNA structure. I've adaptated the original image (allowed under the current license) to include the alpha, beta, and gamma, and pyrophosphate labels. This new image accomplishes 1) reinforcing that NTPs have an alpha, beta, and gamma phosphate group attached and 2) the alpha phosphate becomes a part of the phosphodiester bond formed while the beta and gamma phosphates are cleaved 3) a pyrophosphate group leaves.
