Previously, there was considerable inconsistency between three cards in this deck:
1) This card: the text field tests over the RBC count of alpha thalassemia minor, stating that it is INCREASED. Also notes in the extra field that beta thalassemia can have increased RBC count
2) nid:1550016022137 states that thalassemia minor has a NORMAL RBC count (although the sketchy field, which is hidden by default, says that beta thalassemia can also present with increased RBC count)
3) nid:1516822273369 states that thalassemia minor has an normal RBC count
The BEST answer is "normal or increased", which is supported by the table in UWorld qid 4875. It appears that the two other cards were written based off an old version of this UWorld table which has since been corrected in newer versions. The old table only lists alpha- and beta- thalassemia as having "normal" RBC count instead of "normal or increased". A copy of this old, uncorrected UWorld table can be found on nid:1556531060120 from the v11 deck.
Each of these cards also confusingly makes some distinction between the RBC count in alpha- versus beta- thalassemia, however, the newest UWorld table does NOT mention a difference.
I have submitted suggestions for all three of these cards such that all of them acknowledge that thalassemia minor, whether alpha or beta, can present with either normal or increased RBC count.
