- Fibrinous pericarditis occurs within the first week, usually 1-3 days post-infarction
- In contrast to Dressler syndrome, which occurs 2-10 weeks post MI
- Neutrophils leak out of epicardium into pericardium causing pericarditis
- Only occurs with transmural infarction
