- Merlin is involved in contact inhibition; a behavior expressed by fibroblast-like cells when they adhere to each other or come into contact
- If the cells adhere to each other, this signals each cell to stop growing outwards; when cadherins link, this leads to dephosphorylation of merlin which causes cell cycle arrest and tumor suppression (for as long as the cells are in contact; linked by cadherins)
- If mutated, fibroblast-like cells divide and grow over each other in an uncontrolled manner (important in cancer invasion / metastasis)
