Added UWorld ID 585 to this card.
This was the 2nd most popular choice (33 vs 31%) and clearly was a strong contender for the differential. UWorld explanation states:
"Zinc deficiency causes erythematous skin lesions (mainly around body orifices) that are predominantly vesicular and pustular. Other features include hypogonadism, impaired taste and smell, night blindness, and impaired wound healing. Although the skin lesions in zinc deficiency can resemble necrolytic migratory erythema, this patient's lack of additional findings and her recent diabetes mellitus diagnosis make glucagonoma more likely."
I think this card should be tagged so the differential can be carefully teased out and the student can improve their understanding.
{{c1::Zinc deficiency}}
- Other features of zinc deficiency include hypogonadism, impaired wound healing, and immune dysfunction
- Risk factors for deficiency include malabsorption, bowel resection, poor nutritional intake, and parenteral nutrition
