Per UWorld:
- Suspected fibroadenoma in adolescents (<18) can be managed with reassurance and reevaluation after another menstrual cycle
- However, adults (>18) with a palpable breast mass (even if benign conditions like fibroadenoma are suspected) require imaging
< 30 y/o → ultrasound ± mammogram
30-39 y/o → use above or below algorithm
≥ 40 y/o → Mammogram ± ultrasound
Per AMBOSS:
- A soft, well-defined, mobile mass in a patient < 35 years old is indicative of a fibroadenoma or other benign breast lump, and therefore can be managed with reassurance and follow-up in 2 months
- If the mass in a < 30 year-old female is firm, rigid, and/or nontender, a breast ultrasound is indicated
- Mammogram has poor accuracy in < 30 due to dense breast tissue
- After age 30, mammogram can be used
