This is because the ulnar nerve innervates the flexor carpi ulnaris and the medial portion of the flexor digitorum profundus; once it enters the wrist (between hook of hamate and pisiform bone in Guyon's canal) it divides into superficial ulnar and deep ulnar (deep intrinsic hand muscles)
