Suggestion Pt 1: FA2024 pg. 191 now lists the following for Sulfonamides (TMP on Pt. 2)
Sulfonamides - Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfisoxazole, sulfadiazine:
- MOA: Inhibit dihydropteroate synthase, thus inhibiting folate synthesis. Bacteriostatic (bactericidal when combined with trimethoprim).
- SOA: Gram ⊕, gram ⊝, Nocardia. TMP-SMX for simple UTI.
- Adverse SEs: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, urticaria, liver damage, folate deficiency, optic neuritis, nephrotoxicity, agranulocytosis, hemolysis if G6PD deficient, kernicterus in infants.
- Resistance: ltered enzyme (bacterial dihydropteroate synthase), decreased uptake, or increased PABA synthesis
