Where VD = physiologic dead space (mL)
VT = tidal volume (mL)
PaCO2 = PCO2 of arterial blood
PECO2 = PCO2 of expired air (mmHg)

Equation explanation: volume in the physiologic dead space does not participate in gas exchange and thus is assumed to have zero CO2; this dilutes the amount of CO2 that would be exhaled if all the air that participates in gas exchange was able to be exhaled, rather than mixing with the dead space air
