- The function of a gene can be studied by knocking it out and seeing what happens
- For example, in the chart below, if you knock out (inactivate/delete) the Igf2 gene in female mice, they produce overly large offspring. If you knock out Igf2 in male mice, they produce dwarfs. Thus, you know the Igf2 gene is involved in growth.
