A (airway) is the 1st step and involves assessing & securing the airway:
- Orotracheal tubes are indicated in patients without facial trauma
- Patients with facial trauma require cricothyrotomy
- Patients with cervical spine injury require orotracheal tube intubation; done using flexible bronchoscopy to minimize further injury to spine

B (breathing) is proper ventilation to maintain O2 saturation; target goal is at least 90%

C (circulation) involves inserting two large-bore IVs and starting aggressive fluid resuscitation to prevent hypovolemic shock

D (disability) identify any life-threatening TBI; perform neuro exam and calculate GCS

E (exposure) undress patient entirely for thorough examination of injuries; palpate for vertebral tenderness and rectal tone

This card previously stated ABCS including shock, however, AMBOSS and ATLS algorithm confirms a primary survey of ABCDE is correct (June 2024)
