1) Plain x-ray is the initial imaging study of choice when evaluating an injury or ruling out a fracture.
2) An x-ray series should include at least two views at 90° angles to each other.
3) If patients have normal x-rays but continued symptoms or suspected ligament or tendon injuries in certain areas, then MRI is the preferred imaging method due to its sensitivity and specificity for detecting articular and soft-tissue abnormalities.
