Rationale for change
Valproate is relatively contraindicated in pregnancy as well.
Per Amboss, "Classic anticonvulsants (especially carbamazepine and sodium valproate!) should be avoided if possible → teratogenic effects"
Per UTD on management of headaches in pregnancy, "Some anticonvulsants, particularly valproate, are teratogenic and should be avoided"
