- When transfected into human cells, dsRNA is separated (by dicer) and promotes degradation of target mRNA via RISC (RNA-induced silencing complex)
- An exact match generally results in mRNA degradation, but a partial match also causes translational repression by preventing ribosome and transcription factor binding
