BMI <15 kg/m^2 is becoming an outdated cutoff for hospitalization in adolescents and young adults with an eating disorder. AMBOSS confirms that for adolescents and adults age <26, a percent median BMI <75% for age and sex is the preferred BMI indicator when considering "red flags supporting hospitalization". BMI <15 kg/m^2 is only used for adults age >26. This is also supported by the 2022 guidelines from The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, which lists "<75% median BMI for age and sex" as the first indication under the heading "Factors supporting hospitalization in adolescents and young adults with an eating disorder".
